Journal Entry 1

I watched my parents die today.

It was mostly normal, as normal as a family of asteroid miners could be, my parents were cooking a cake for my 17th birthday party today.
They were in the middle of mixing when a little buzz started to sound, the ground started to shake under my feet, really loud and annoying, dad looked terrified and yelled at me to head to the basement and hide.
I was confused and worried but I did as he said, hiding behind some power canisters, There was a loud whirring outside that I assumed was a spaceship, the door opened and closed and footsteps crossed the floor above me.
Muffled voices started to talk and my curiosity took over as I stood up slowly and walked to the little window at the top of the basement, I opened it carefully and looked outside, there were some real buff looking guys in some weird bulky suits talking to my mom and dad, I could hear them talking about dads last mining haul, my dad had been talking about it for months, apparently it was impressive.
“We want all of it.”
The man at the front said, I couldn’t believe it, we were close to the end of the fourth rotation of the asteroid field, every fifth rotation a small moon would pass in between the fields and the star at the center, causing a Black night for a whole rotation, no solar power meant no mining and if we didn’t sell our fourth rotation haul we wouldn’t last the fifth one.
My dad knew this and seemed adamant about not giving it away, mom as well, but the guys didn’t look to pleased at that and asked for it again, this time louder.
My dad still refused, he was to proud to give up his work, unfortunately it’s what got him killed.
The leader sighed, and quickly drew a pistol and shot them both in the head with amazing accuracy.
I couldn’t tell if I had cried or not, everything became hazy, like a dream where you can’t move, I watched the men dump their bodies in a silo, watched them haul the Crystals and minerals, watched them pack up and fly away.
As soon as they left I ran out the basement, through the door barefoot towards the silo, I couldn’t believe they were dead and yet they were plain as day in front of me, kneeling down I hugged them and cried for a few hours, fell asleep at one point.
I woke up with no more tears, etching the face of the man who shot them into my brain, I wanted him to pay for what he’d done to them, what right did he have to do it? I dug them graves on the eastern end of our asteroid, mom had named it Little John, after a very old book, the gentle giant she called it.
I said a prayer over them then headed back to our house, gathering as many things I thought I could carry and use, I wanted to kill that man, no matter what.
